

REAL Macaroni & Cheese

This is the right way to do macaroni & cheese (vs. -- gasp -- from a box).

Ingredients
- 6 Tbsp. butter *
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 3/4 tsp. Worcestershire
- 3 cup(s) milk
- 1 small grated yellow onion
- 3 cup(s) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 8 oz. cooked and drained elbow macaroni
- 3/4 cup soft bread crumbs

- In saucepan over medium low heat melt 4 tablespoons butter; blend in flour and seasonings, stirring until smooth and bubbly.
- Gradually stir in milk; cook and stir until thick and smooth.
- Stir in grated onion and cheese.
- Place cooked and drained macaroni into a buttered 3-quart casserole dish.
- Pour sauce over macaroni and gently mix to blend.
- Melt remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and toss with the bread crumbs. Sprinkle bread crumbs over the macaroni. Bake at 375F for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

We all loved this. Only changes...I didn't have any bread crumbs so I crushed Caesar Croutons and added the melted butter. Loved it. I also left out the onions and sprinkled the top lightly with garlic salt. We'll definitely be making this again. Thank you.

My entire family loved this recipe. I was a little concerned about the onion, but we all thought it added a great flavor. I used Panko bread crumbs and the top was excellent. Will save this recipe and use over and over. Definitely one of my 9 year old's new favs.

I did not like the onion flavor all through the dish. Next time I try it I will leave that out.
